Hello, and welcome.

For those unfamiliar with my work, I’ve been writing about politics and culture for more than a decade and you can find me in places like Jacobin, the Washington Post, the Toronto Star, and the New Statesman. I’m co-host of the film and politics podcast Michael and Us and in 2022 I published a collection of essays called The Dead Center: Reflections on Liberalism and Democracy After the End of History. More recently, I coauthored 2023’s Seeking Social Democracy with the late Ed Broadbent — former leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party.

In terms of what you’ll find here: I’m new to Substack and am going to experiment a bit. For now, I’m planning a minimum of one free post each week plus a few additional paywalled pieces every month. I may also send out a semi-regular roundup with updates about what I’ve been working on and things I’ve published elsewhere.
