What Happens When Liberal Democracy Fails?

In conversation with Corbin Trent, Grace Blakeley, and Evelyn Quartz

By way of some quick housekeeping, I’m currently offering heavily discounted paid subscriptions, so if you’d like to support my work and read everything here in full, click here to get a full 50% off. It isn’t sustainable to write everything for free, so if it’s within your means, you’d be doing me a solid by chipping in a few bucks.

This morning, I was delighted to join

, , and Corbin Trent from for a broad-ranging discussion of liberalism and its ongoing crisis of legitimacy. We began by talking about the state of liberal democracy in our respective countries — Canada, the US, and Great Britain — before moving into a more general survey of the current political moment. Regrettably, because of time constraints, we had to cap things at just over an hour. Rest assured, we’ll be doing a Part II soon enough.

If you’re unfamiliar with these folks, I highly recommend their Substacks. Evelyn is a former Capitol Hill staffer who has been writing about the ongoing disintegration and dysfunction of America’s political class with particular perceptiveness. Corbin, who co-founded Justice Democrats and has worked alongside Bernie Sanders and AOC, among other things brings an organizer’s perspective to the table. Grace, who you’ve seen me talk to here on Substack before, most recently authored the excellent book Vulture Capitalism and is one of the sharpest economic minds on the global left today.

Thanks to everyone who watched live, and hope you all enjoy.

-Luke
