I remember listening to Prime Minister’s Question Time on Radio 4 as an American back in the 80’s (English husband)
I thought they were saying yeah, yeah, yeah in a mean way but my husband told me, no they’re saying hear, hear, hear…. pronunciation to my Wisconsin raised ear hyeah hyeah hyeah (or in my grandma’s Norwegian accented Wisconny Ja Ja Ja)
They were magnificently mean to Mrs Thatcher though ….
I wish we overly sincere Americans were even half as wonderfully irreverent
The key to understanding the British culture of irrelevance is seeing how it also punches down to working class people.
We can see it shows like Little Britain or even Embarassing Bodies. I remember thinking with the latter why is this a British medical show and not an American one, they have the NHS?
The US is hierarchically chaotic and criticism is more like pre Mussolini Italian artist circles.
Often wealthy ‘elites’ cannot enter private social circles not due to physically being barred but because they would be faced with a satirical insult they were called by one of our most talented artists or scientists. The general public is not aware of the precise insult, however, they intuit who was excluded on the basis of monetary exchanges that are public.
